SSDI vs. SSI, side by side
Social Security runs two disability programs. They use the same medical definition of disability for adults, and differ in almost everything else.

- Medicare, after a waiting period
- Back pay
- Can reach back up to 12 months before the application
SSI
Supplemental Security Income

- Financial need
- Income and savings limits
- Yes

- Health coverage
- Generally Medicaid

Some claimants qualify for both
When an SSDI payment is low, a person with limited income and resources may receive SSDI and SSI together. The two claims are filed together and decided together.
